Synthetic Wig Care
Synthetic wigs are fibers of artificial hair strands and as such you must never wash your synthetic wig in hot water. Hot water will damage/soften the fibbers of the synthetic wig and therefore you will loose any of it’s styling or shape – curls, waves etc.
Do not also ever use a blow dryer on your synthetic wig as the heat will have a similar if not worst effect as mentioned above.
A synthetic wig can not absorb conditioning agents like real hair, always use commercially produced shampoos, conditioners and hair sprays designed specifically for synthetic wigs.
You do not have to wash a synthetic wig everyday in-fact over washing can shorten the life span of your wig. Always read and follow the instructions that will accompany your wig for the up-keep and cleaning conditions. As a general rule a synthetic wig will only need washing once every 4 weeks or so.

The following steps are best practise for washing synthetic wigs:

  1. Fill a large bowl, tub/sink with cold water and mix/add your synthetic wig shampoo as per instructed by the manufacturer of the shampoo.
  2. Before placing the wig in the water you can use a wide tooth comb not a brush to remove (gently) any tangles if you like. Do not try and comb your wig whist it is wet.
  3. Use your hands to submerge and move the wig around in the soapy water. If you have areas in-which has makeup like the front edges use more concentrated shampoo in these areas.
  4. After washing you now will need to rinse the wig under/with clean water to remove all the shampoo and remember cold water only.
  5. Once you have rinsed the wig it is now time to add some conditioner to your wig. Using a bowl of clean water add your conditioner (as instructed) and repeat the same process as in the washing process but this time leave your wig to soak in the conditioner for about 10 minutes then remove and rinse with in clean cold water. Please note that some conditioners require that the conditioner remain on the wig and not be rinsed out.
  6. After you have rinsed your wig you now have to towel dry it (Do not blow dry) by using a blotting type motion with the towel. After this you now leave your wig to air dry on a wig stand. You can if you like gently brush your synthetic wig after the towel drying process but be very careful and gentle. Synthetic wigs keep there shape and style after washing and generally do not need to be brushed into shape.

Real Hair Wigs
Maintaining and washing your real hair wig is very much like looking after your own hair but it is advised to use shampoos and conditioners that are specifically designed for real hair wigs. As usual always read and follow the cleaning instructions accompanied with your wig. It is always recommended to use cold water much like in the washing a synthetic wig. You can how ever use a hair dryer on a real hair wig and style it like you would your own hair but towel dry before hand just like you would your own.
A real hair wig can be clean and needs cleaning more often than a synthetic wig, always resist the temptation to wash too often as this will lessen the life of any wig. Real hair wigs need clean every 2 weeks or so.

Follow the same general instructions as above for synthetic wigs only substitute the type of cleaning products that for real hair wigs only.
The main difference is you can use a hair dryer, curling irons or hot rollers for styling and use a comb for best results, you may use a brush but use a wire tooth brush rather than a plastic tooth brush.
