Are human haired wigs expensive? Is it worth it?

For Comic Con I’m being Freya from Chobits and I wanted to get sort of a lady gaga wig, but I don’t know if I should get a synthetic or real haired wig. Also, I am going to a wig store, not buying it online.

Michael Jackson Wig

“This Halloween, you know there is going to be a huge demand for pairs of sunglasses, sequined gloves, leather jackets and flat black hats. Yes, the world will be going crazy with tributes to the man himself, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, or as he was known to his fans, the Gloved One. But there is one piece of the puzzle that might be missing there. The one that is probably most important of all. The iconic Michael Jackson hair. You can of course buy a Michael Jackson wig but we’re here to offer you all kinds of other alternatives to that. Start with some serious amounts of hair jel. You know that Michael Jackson had long black hair. He used to wear it in a variety of styles, sometimes curly and sometimes it was long and straight. If you simply make use of some hair jel, you you can slick your hair back and create a Michael Jackson like effect without any need to buy a Michael Jackson wig. Add in perhaps a bit of talcum powder to give your face a faded look as Michael’s looked from all the surgeries he underwent (he had undergone a series of skin grafts in order to make his skin look white) and you’ll have the perfect Michael Jackson wig without any need for the actual wig. But what if you really had your heart set on an honest to goodness Michael Jackson wig? If that is your desire, you are definitely in luck. A quick Google search brought up lots of options. My first stop when shopping for stuff like this is usually Amazon. com, not because they are necessarily cheaper, but rather because of the fact that they offer free super-saver shipping when you spend over $25. This is a great deal and if you are buying for yourself and your kid for example, then you could easily get everything you need and never have to leave the comfort of your own home. Some of the options I found on Amazon. com include an 80s style Michael Jackson wig which recalls his time at the top of the charts. It’s got short, bushy dark hair and comes only with the wig. Or if you want to go for something a little more elaborate, for under $17, I found a straight long haired wig, like the gloved one used to wear in the latter part of his life which comes together with a pair of aviator style sun glasses. Whatever style of Michael Jackson wig you choose though, the most important thing, is just have fun and have a safe Halloween.

There’s nothing more exciting than getting dressed up for a Halloween or costume party, but when you want to be completely original and fun with your costume, the choice of what you and your friends can dress up as can be daunting. Luckily, the idea of doing a group costumes has become more popular, so if you choose to dress up as a musical group like ABBA for Halloween with your friends, you’re sure to have fun with your costume, while being as creative as you want to be with your look. ABBA, for those who are unaware, is a 70s singing group that has had international hits like “Dancing Queen,” and was known for their disco style clothes. Cat suits, big sleeves, frills, big shoes and mini skirts were all staples in the group’s wardrobe, and with some hunting, you and your friends will be able to pull off the ABBA look with ease. Women can easily mimic Agneta and Frida’s outfits in one of two ways. Long blonde wigs are the perfect way to start the disco style, and should be matched with a shiny, bright-colored mini skirt over a spangled mini skirt or flared bell bottoms. If you’re lucky, you may find a catsuit or two that you can add bright, thick belts of color to for a great, simple costume. This look is great with go-go boots or high platforms. Men trying to dress like ABBA’s Benny and Bjorn can have just as much fun as their female counterparts with their costumes. Disco reigned supreme in the 70s, so wearing big patterns and bright polyester pants is a sure way to get the ABBA look. Pantsuits in bright colors, like blue, purple or pink, are fun to use as your ABBA costume. If you have no problem showing of some chest hair, keep your long sleeved shirt unbuttoned and pop your collar high before folding it over. Ruffled and lacy shirts and bell bottoms with a wide belt adorning the outfit is a cheaper costume if you have a short budget. ABBA costumes, in their elaborate planning and bright details, will be a fun and wacky costume to put together. But one of the most important elements of this costume is the fun, happy personalities that come with the ABBA appearance. Basic Wig Guide

Here are 3 simple steps to measure your head in order to determine your wig cap size:
Before you measure, make sure to flatten your hair. This will help take into consideration the fact that you will probably be wearing a mesh wig cap liner beneath your wig for a more comfortable and secure fit. Use a cloth measuring tape, being sure not to pull the tape measure too tight. Just rest the tape over or around your head. Pulling the tape measure too tight will stretch the tape and will not give you an accurate measurment. While it is important to get an accurate measurement to determine your wig cap size, keep in mind that most wigs have tabs which allow up to one inch of adjustment for a more secure fit.
1) Measure Around Your Head: Measure the total distance around your head starting at your natural hairline in the front, to just above your ears, and around the back to the bend of your neck and to the front of your head.
2) Measure Front to Back: Bend your head back. Then measure from your natural hairline in the front of your forehead, back over the crown to the bend where your head meets the top of your neck.
3) Measure Ear to Ear: Measure at the top front of one ear, lay the tape measure up and over the crown of your head to the same position on your other ear.
The 3 measurements listed above will determine the circumference, the depth and width of your wig cap and allow you to choose your correct size.
The following sizes should be used as a guide only, as cap sizes may vary by manufactorer.
*Head Size – Child: (19″ Around the Head) (12″ Front to Back) (12″ Ear to Ear).
*Head Size – Petite: (21″ Around the Head) (13 ¼” Front to Back) (13″ Ear to Ear).
*Head Size – Petite/Average: (21. 5″ Around the Head) (13 3/4″ Front to Back) (13 1/4″Ear to Ear).
*Head Size Average: (22″ Around the Head) (14 1/4″ Front to Back) (13 1/4″ Ear to Ear).
*Head Size Average/Large: (22. 5″ Around the Head) (14 3/4″ Front to Back) (13 3/4″ Ear to Ear).
*Head Size Large: (23″ Around the Head) (15 1/4″ Front to Back) (14″ Ear to Ear).
How To Put Your Wig On.
1) Take the wig out of the box, shake it gently to loosen fibers.
2) Find the front and the back of wig (remember the label goes in back).
3) Brush your own hair back, securing any longer pieces with a hair pin and place a wig cap over your head (keeps your existing hair from falling and the wig securely in place.
4) Grasp the wig at the top and slip it over your head from hairline to back.
5) Adjust wig so that the edges meet with your own natural hairline.
6) The wig should feel secure but no too tight. If necessary, adjust the back elastic straps with hooks toward the inner label for tightening, and away from the label if you need to loosen it.
7) Style as you would your own hair, keeping in mind to be gentle with the hair. Most wigs will require some cutting and styling to create the individual wearer’s desired effect. A professional wig stylist who can help you achieve your look and teach you how to use various approved wig care products is preferred. Remember, you would be best to take off too little than too much as it will not grow back.
Styling and Maintenance of Your Wig.
1) Cleaning Your Wig:
- Brush the wig thoroughly, remembering not to pull too hard on the hair fibers.
- Fill your sink or basin with cold or luke warm water, adding shampoo specifically designed for synthetic hair, or shampoo for color treated hair.
- Let your wig soak for 5-10 minutes. You can move the wig around in a gentle motion, but do not rub it.
- Rinse in cold or luke warm water until thoroughly rinsed.
- Generously apply conditioner to the wig, working it through with fingertips.
- Rinse again until all conditioner is removed from the wig.
- Gently blot the wig with a towel. Do not rub.
- Run your fingertips through the wig fibers without pulling to loosen any tangles or knots.
- Place the wig on a wig stand to air dry. If the wig is human hair, you can use a blow dryer, but it is recommended you use a wig stand as well to preserve the wigs longevity.
2) Styling of Synthetic Wigs:
- If upon receiving your wig, you find you need it altered or restyled, it is advised you take it to a professional stylist to achieve the desired effect. Do not fuss with the styling of a synthetic wig, as most often a simple shake it and go method works just fine. Hence, these were made specifically for ready to wear. You can of course, clip and pin different sections to your liking for a change of style, but as you get used to the wig, you will most likely find that you do not have to do anything if at all in maintaining it’s style. For curly wigs, use a pick or comb to loosen fibers, but do not pull on the hair.
3) Styling of Human Hair Wig:
- If upon receiving your wig, you find you need it altered or restyled, it is advised you take it to a profession stylist to achieve the desired effect. After air drying or using a blow dryer with the hair completely dry, use a wider tooth comb or brush, starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots. Remember it is human hair, and it too can get split ends if not treated delicately. Place the wig on it’s wig stand and use hot rollers or a curling iron on a low setting to style the hair to your liking.
4) Storing Your Wig:
- Store your wig on a wig stand in a clean, damp free and heat free environment. This will ensure it stay tangle and soil free between wearing, as well as maintain the wig’s style.

I am a crossdresser and I like to wear girls clothes. I am also straight and can be very macho too. I feel comfortable in tight jeans or I can put on that little black dress, hose and heels for that special occassion. I have never done this, but wondered how you would handle it if a guy you were dating showed up wearing a mini skirt, blouse, pantyhose, heels, makeup and wig. And he really looked hot. Would you invite him and treat him like a lady, or shut door in his pretty face? I really need to know!
Thanks ladies for answers. Now I understand why guys can not be themselves around their woman and why they hide things from them. Or why so many guys cheat on their ladies and go to other, more compassionate women!

However, if you live somewhere with high humidity or have been to a place with a lot of smoke you’ll probably need to wash your wig more often. Also, be careful when drying your wig – only allow your wig to drip and air dry. Conditioning spray can be used regularly to add softness to your wig. Trends In Wigs And Hairpieces

Want a change? Don’t buy that bottle of hair dye or self-perming kit just yet. Hairpieces are becoming more and more popular as a healthier, quicker, and easier option for changing your hair and your look. Celebrities have been using hair extensions, clip-on hairpieces, and full wigs for years-and you can, too! Here are just a few popular trends in wigs and hairpieces that anyone can follow.
Hair extensions add length without the wait. Hair extensions are one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets. Many of those gorgeous, perfectly wavy, sun-kissed tresses on movie stars and models aren’t real-they’re hair extensions. These are a great way to add length quickly, and are starting to get popular at weddings and for formal parties. Glued-in extensions are not always easy on your hair and can take about three hours to apply, and they can also get expensive-so they’re usually used for special occasions only.
Clip-ons are perfect for a quick change. Clip-on hairpieces are much easier to apply than glued-in hair extensions. The cheapest are made of synthetic hair, and can be applied in a variety of shades. Pricier versions are made of human hair and can be dyed to match your color. Clip-on hair is often incorporated into ponytails and updo’s for the most natural looks.
Wigs and parties-the new trends. Ever since Jessica Simpson wore a red wig to the NCLR ALMA awards, wigs have been getting press at celebrity events and parties. They’re becoming stylish party attire, and with good reason: a wig is an excellent way to change your look for a formal party-you can choose any color you want, without damaging your hair. Wigs are also easier to wear than glue-on hair extensions.
Wigs and weddings-the perfect match. This year’s wedding fashion includes long, free-flowing hair with a hint of delicate curl. For many style conscious brides, the flowing curls just aren’t possible by the wedding date. Women with short hair are incorporating hairpieces into their wedding look more and more. Lace front wigs are especially popular. These are wigs with a delicate lace base near the hairline that is undetectable, providing an extremely natural look and stunning hair. The back of the wig has a more traditional wig cap, also undetectable under a veil.
Weaves for long-term styles. If you want a long-term change, a weave is often the way to go. Real or synthetic human hair is woven into your natural hair, which is often braided into tiny cornrows. Human hair is more desirable than synthetic, because it looks more natural and won’t melt when subjected to the heat from a hair dryer or curling iron.
Hairpieces are an excellent way to give yourself a dramatic change in look-without putting your hair through a damaging dyeing or perming process. Once associated with illness and hair loss, wigs and hairpieces are quickly growing in mainstream popularity-and are becoming seen on many people, young and older, just looking for a stunning change in look. One of celebrity’s best-kept beauty secrets for years, millions of women are now turning to hairpieces for those one-of-a-kind looks for special occasions-and the freedom to change their hair quickly and easily.

I don’t know the difference between the hair extensions that braid in tracks and the fusion bonded ones. What’s the best way? And why do the prices vary from $600-2500!!! I want to have long blonde hair but I don’t want to ruin my short blonde hair to get it…Help!
